FAQs about Sump Pumps
Check out the most frequently asked questions about Sump Pumps. Click one of the questions below to reveal the answer and see our FAQ Page to find them all.

A Sump Pump is used to remove collected rainwater or groundwater that has made its way into your home/basement.
The Sump simply refers to the local basin where the water is collected. The Sump Pump takes the water and pumps it away from the basin and your home, protecting your foundation from water buildup and damages.
Major water buildup will begin to occur in your water basin or even in the ground if there are cracks or breaks.
When your pump stops working and can no longer pump water away from your foundation, water starts to destroy the foundation of your home or property. Still standing water can be one of the biggest problems for your home's longevity, not to mention the potential of mold buildup if not addressed right away!
On average, a Sump Pump will last between 7 and 10 years, when properly maintained and serviced.
No, not every house has a sump pump.
Sump Pumps are mainly found in homes with a basement or crawl space. Additionally environments with large amounts of rainfall or poor soil drainage.
If you can't find your Sump Pump, there are a few places to check;
1. If you do not have a basement or crawlspace, then if you do have a sump pump, it may be underneath your home.
2. Check for the lowest place in your basement or crawl space.
3. Look for a recessed pit or basin (often covered by a plastic lid) at the lowest point of your basement or crawl space.
If your home is over 2,000 sq ft. or located in a high water table area, it is recommended to upgrade your sump pump above the standard size (1/3 HP) to something more powerful, 1/2 HP and above.
Sump Pumps are not meant to run all the time, but when heavy rainfall occurs, its important your Sump Pump can function properly during that time.
They can run for a few hours, up to 10, but will begin to burnout or overheat easily. It is recommended that if your sump pump is running for longer than a few hours, you may be having issues with groundwater buildup and should look to service your Sump Pump right away to reduce any potential damages.
This depends on how much rainfall your area gets and how much groundwater needs to be pumped away from your foundation.
In Puyallup, we receive higher volumes of rainfall than the eastern side of WA state. If we compared our sump pump usage to theirs, our side of the state would be significantly higher.
It is not uncommon for your Pierce County home's sump pump to be running multiple times of day or week, during those rainy days. If you sump pump is constantly running when the sun has been out OR has been running non-stop 5+ hours, you may have collected groundwater issues or sump pump efficiency problems.
