FAQs about Backflow Prevention

You should get your backflow system checked annually at minimum.

If you own a commercial property or building, we highly recommend more frequent checks on larger buildings.

A New Backflow Preventer will last between 5 and 15 years with proper care, sometimes longer with regularly scheduled maintenance over time.

A backflow preventer is a plumbing device that stops contaminated water from getting into your clean water supply.

Without a properly function backflow preventer, you can easily contaminate your water, reduce the water quality and make it unsafe for drinking or bathing.

Some of the most common causes of Backflow problems are;

1) Big changes in the water temperature in the system mainly during heating and cooling seasons. Here on the Western side of Washington in Puyallup, we can get down to freezing temperatures and often backflow problems can occur as we get into the freeing temperatures.

2) Changes in water pressure in your system that you're not prepared for. Sometimes this can occur when you add a new system or feature (like sprinkler lines) that take a large amounts of your water and requires tons of pressure. This change in pressure can cause valve to loosen and even your backflow to leak or break. Be sure to re-check your water pressure when you make any big changes to your plumbing system as they can easily affect your backflow preventer.

When your backflow preventer breaks, you begin to get backpressure.

Backpressure is when unfiltered, dirty water makes its way into your clean water pipes and moving backwards into your system. If not addressed right away, it can quickly contaminate your entire home's plumbing system.

If you have a backflow preventer assembly, it will be located at the beginning of your irrigation system usually in the lawn or on the side of the building, OR located where the water service starts to enter the building.

Make sure that you know where yours is located, or have Gallucci's locate your assembly for you.

Yes it will, in order to ensure safe testing and no contamination with your water, its important that we interrupt your system temporarily.

We will plan accordingly around your needs and let you know ahead of time before we shut off your water. But, if your backflow is broken and contaminating your water, then we will shut it off immediately to reduce any reoccurring damages.

Here are the top 5 Major Signs you may have backflow issues and need to call Gallucci's today!

  • Strange Tastes or the taste of metal in your water.
  • Weird smell coming from your faucets or drains.
  • Discoloration in your water or even signs of small sediment.
  • Big Drop sin water pressure could be coming from leaks or cracks.
  • If your backflow preventer is making weird noises it could have internal damages.
